AUTHORS SIGHTING
1982-83
My sighting was in 1982or 83. I did a
drawing of the creature some nine years
after my encounter and this is about
what that first drawing looked like.
It had been raining most of the day and
my husband Tommy and I were tired of
being cooped up. We decided to go to
the store, it was about three miles from
our place next to County Road 833. Our
children were home so I'm guessing it
was after 3:30 probably closer to 4 PM.
We left the store about 4-4:30 The rain
had mostly stopped so visibility was
pretty good even though it was over
cast. As we came to the road we would
normally turn down to go home my
husband drove on by heading south
down Hacienda Ave to Hunting Club
which at that time was the other paved
road, even if in bad repair. Montura
Estates back then wasn't very
populated. It was mainly woods with
cypress strands and pine. Cypress
swamps, lakes and palmettos. Wild
animals, every kind known for the area.
Lots of snakes and alligators and frogs
and mosquitoes by the millions.
As we drove pass Del Sur Ave we saw a
man, thats what I thought it was, come
up on the road out of the woods and
start walking heading south like us. I
wondered who it could be out in that
kind of weather, it was windy and cool.
There wasn't anything close to walk to.
As we got a little closer it crossed the
road in front of us and now was on our
side of the road still heading south. I
thought that he most be going to the
crossroads like us but was going to
head west out towards Co.Rd.833,there
was a trailer out that way.

We were traveling slow just enjoying
being out. There wasn't another car on
the road so we  weren't in anyones way.
The road was so narrow back then if two
cars passed at least one had to move a
little on the shoulder. As we came up on
our turn,we were heading east I realized
that this person hadn't turned like I
thought he would put had crossed over
the crossroad and was still headed
south back into the deep woods where
there wasn't anything but wilderness. As
we started turning the creature was on
my side of the window and I got a  clear
look at him. I noticed that what I thought
was black clothing was hair. I first
noticed The hair as it blew away from
its legs as it moved. Then I realized that
it was covered in hair. Hair that was
long on its head angling down towards
its wide shoulders. Its arms were held
close to its body at that time as if it was
cold, slightly hunched as a human would
do walking in the Wind its head was or
seamed to be angled slightly down as if
it was watching were it was walking. I
know I didn't say anything right then I
believe because my brain was trying to
process what my eyes were seeing. MY
husband stopped the car, slight squeal
of the brakes, and he looked at me and
asked."Is that what I thought it was?" I
said,"I think so."

He started backing up and I was
straining to get another look at this
creature but even though it was only a
second or two the Skunk Ape was gone.
Crossroads as they look today. Wide and
straight with shoulders cleared.The red
dot is where I first realized  I was
looking at a Skunk Ape.Below is the old
place  we first moved in
My son with friends catching a wild
hog. He's the one with out the hat.
I raised
Peacocks. I love
birds of all kind.
Some make
strange sounds
Peacocks scream
some say like a
woman, I thought
they sounded
pretty. I said that
because of a little
thing that
happened to my
daughter and
myself.
We looked every where. We went to the end of the road and back again. We looked out into the
woods, but unless we'd gotten out we couldn't have seen anything because the pine woods were
so thick and had big clumps of palmettoes and other brush. We drove down Appaloosa Ave. that
was close by and finally we went home. We told our two children what we'd seen but then we
started thinking that maybe that would scare them as we had to live out there so we told them it
most have been a pine tree. There was one down at the end of the road right up on the road way
and being black from a distance and pine needles blowing that was what we saw and our eyes
were playing tricks on us.
First of all we couldn't even see that tree until we got to Appaloosa because of a little curve in the
road (Which isn't there now.) And pine trees don't come up on the road on one side and cross over
to the other and walk in front of you. I don't know how my kids could have swallowed that one.
My husband did tell his aunt and uncle who also lived there ,and still do, about what we saw as he
was telling the story they looked at him like he was crazy. You guessed it, he told them the pine
tree story. He never talked about it again and we lived there for close to 20 years.
Other Odd Occurrences in Montura,Fl.
I was involved with church. I played the guitar with the other musicians  playing for the choir and I
was lead singer with a quartet. My daughter was a lead singer for the youth choir, she was also the
tenor for our quartet. We use to practice in a mobile home that sat empty most of the year.  There
was a few furnishings and the lights were left on in case the owners wanted to visit with their
relatives. This home sat right by itself .There was a huge open field in front that didn't have any
trees growing on it , just high grass. Most places in this area was like mine surrounded by pine
woods. The sister that owned the home was the sister of two of our quartet members. That's how
we got to practice there with out bothering anyone and no one bothering us./ Another sister who
lived in Georgia, she and her husband owned a grocery store but times were hard and they needed a
little help keeping afloat so the husband came down and worked with Carols husband,(singer in
group), and they let him stay rent free in this home. I asked Carol on Sunday how he was doing and
did he like his job? She said "Oh he left, you know he drank and he got drunk and swore a big black
monster came up and looked right at him through the window. As soon as daylight came he was on
our door step saying he wasn't spending another night in that place and was going home" I asked
what she thought he saw. She said, "nothing it was his Imagination the black bear were all hunted
out in the area". I said, " well maybe he saw a big dog or even a panther". She didn't think so. You
know I should have thought about my sighting that I had a few years earlier but I didn't , it didn't
even cross my mind. My daughter bought that house several years later and one day as I went over
to see her she asked "Mom what do you think Carols brother in law saw that night he got so
scared?" I said "Well Carol didn't think it was anything." She said Mom go out and look in that
window. So I did and I was surprised that I had to stand on my tip toes and then I could barely see
in. It had to be something really big to look someone in the eye then it hit me, I knew exactly what
my daughter was getting at and maybe he did see a "Monster".
WE lived in the deep pine woods next to the Hunting Reservoir. Hunters would come as far away as
Miami and set up camp for the weekend and hunt on foot with dogs and air boats and swamp
buggies. You could hear them all weekend long. Some times these guys would have to return home
to get back to work and they would loose a dog or two. We would get these animals as they came
straggling in from their hunts. I would feed them hoping their owners would return and if not then
keep them until I found them a new home. We had about seven at this time . They were hunters as I
said and didn't need a  human hunter to go with them. They would pack up and hunt all night. The
leader of this bunch was a female we called Gyp. There was also a black Labrador we called
Blacky.  They come in torn to pieces. The female was cut deeply down her side you could see bone.
Blacky was almost as bad. The rest of the dogs were in good shape except for a scratch or two. I
doctored them and they laid around until they were healed then they were off again. It wasn't long
they came back in the same shape. I thought well if they live through this one they'll leave what
ever got them alone. Again they healed and off they went. This time Gyp didn't come back I knew I
wouldn't see her again. Blacky was cut down his sides the way she'd been. I called Carol and asked
her if her husband still wanted Blacky, He was a devout hunter and had several dogs, she said
they'd come get him and take him to the Vet. Several weeks later I asked Carol how Blacky was
doing and she told me fine that the vet said he'd be good as new. Her husband who hunted dogs all
the time said he didn't know what got a whole of those dogs but it wasn't a hog. He'd seen to many
dogs cut by hogs and no hog did that to them.
